This inspirational dance tune captured my heart from the first line, “She said baby don’t let this world pass you by, get on out there and participate in life…” I hate to be dramatic but seriously the lyrics and musicality of this joint are so clutch!! Monique’s vocals are like a hot knife melting whipped butter onto the track, and as dominant as her voice is, it’s simultaneously angelic. Her intonation is like a breath of crisp fresh air, it’s uncanny. After you get over the gorgeousness of that voice and the catchiness of the bassline groove, you start to notice the subtle yet ever-present sound of the bongos driving everything home, almost as if war drums commanding that you keep going full steam ahead.
While trapped in the captivating beat, you involuntary start to rock by the time the first chorus kicks in. All of that awesomeness aside, perhaps the most important aspect of this powerhouse of a song is the message. (see lyrics below) By the time the bridge comes around demanding that you believe in yourself and letting you know that you can have what you dream, you have fully bought into the hype and your own greatness and are now rocking along with Monique with a new bounce in your step.
This song came at a really good time for me and probably for a lot of others also. I would call it the ultimate Women’s Anthem but that would be selfish… it’s totally egalitarian. “Don’t Quit” is a letter that an older wiser Monique Ella Rose wrote to her younger self. It’s a motivational loving message that she sings to her inner-child with so much power and fearless conviction that there is an eerie piercing that seems to go directly to the heart. She demands that you push through your fears and do the work to get what you want. I wish I could muster up what I want to say to little Kindra and put it in such a poignant and impactful sonnet, but by the same token I needed to hear these words just like this. Monique made sure to get the point across, you’re doing just fine, and as long as you try, don’t worry... it gets greater later. I love this song, love this message, and I love Monique’s incredible voice, harmonies, and vocal arrangements. I hope this touches you as much as it did me.
Enjoy!
