OMG YOU GUYS!!!!! This was the most fun I may have ever had at a concert. It was literally what it sounds like. Stevie Wonder threw a singalong party and invited a few thousand of his closest friends! He opened with "As If You Read My Mind" a touching ballad and we all sang and swayed. AND THEN we took off like a rocket, I think I danced for the entire show (good thing I had an aisle seat) slow jams like "Ribbon In The Sky" and "Overjoyed" were welcomed sit-down breaks, as I clearly needed to recharge for the next round. Stevie thought this thing out properly. Clearly, he had me in mind.
Besides the fun of singing along with my favorite artist, who just happens to be a legendary icon, somewhere in the middle of it all I had the realizations “WOW he still sounds absolutely amazing! This band is incredible! This is a once in a lifetime experience!” Also, those of us that have followed Stevie all our lives know that he has a larger than life sense of humor, so not only was there singing and dancing… he got jokes too.
This concert was so immersive and interactive with so many cool touches and moments. At the beginning of the show everyone received LED wristbands that synchronized with a custom light show for each song. It was like audio/visual sensory utopia. Another fun moment was when Stevie told us he was taking us all to music school for a singing class and began teaching us parts. Naturally, I played teacher’s assistant and helped my section get it together. Not that we were being graded or anything, but if we had been, we would have gotten an A+ plus extra credit for being on rhythm. (I’m looking at you section to my left…SMH)
At some time during the concert I got a very surreal other dimensional feeling, although I was very present in the now and enjoying every second, I was at the same time transported back to my childhood in my bedroom playing my Dad’s Stevie Wonder albums on my Fisher Price record player. Then during “Sir Duke” I had vivid memories of teaching myself to play that opener on my alto sax in high school, and don’t even get me started on that time I sang back up for that Steve Wonder tribute show in college at The Berklee Performance Center. I had such deep nostalgic flashbacks that being at this show turned into feeling like more of a blessing than just a good time. For many of us Stevie’s music is the fabric of our lives. There is something so special about having the man himself invite you to sing along with him and personally take you for a ride through his musical journey of 6 decades. If you are lucky enough to have one of these shows within a 100-mile radius of you, for the love of everything good, righteous and holy BUY A TICKET!!!
Favorite moments in the show:
My Eyes Don’t Cry I lead my entire row in the Hustle (because Detroit)
Master Blaster- I danced so hard I needed a bottle of water afterwards
The piano solo of “Overjoyed” it was just breathtaking
I got a set list at the end!!!
Oh, and no big deal… but THIS happened!!!!!!!
