If Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, and Julie Garland had a baby it would be Victory Boyd -Jussie Smollett
I was scrolling through Facebook one 4 a.m. insomniac night and came across a video of a sweet face girl with wild natural hair and a guitar. OF COURSE I’M CLICKING ON THIS!!!
This gorgeous doll did one of the most beautiful renditions of a Stevie Wonder song that I have ever heard. There I was laying in my bed in the middle of the night/morning in complete awe. So, I went down the rabbit hole of Victory Boyd Youtube videos and became an instafan! Then wait..what!?! Did this page just say that she was performing in MY city the next week? I immediately purchased tickets for the show. Bonus: She was opening for Jussie Smollett, whose album I also loved.
As soon as the lights went dim I pushed my way as close to the stage as possible, I was so ready!!!! Her all-girl band (keys, guitar, bass, and drums) looked like a dream come to life. The first thing I noticed was the big-haired dazzling vision on bass standing behind Victory, we later find out that she is Victory’s younger sister…figures, beauty obviously runs in the family. Victory told us that she was doing 5 songs, I was immediately sad after her first note knowing that the countdown had begun. She is the type of artist that you could listen to all night. I would describe her as a soul-folk, singer-songwriter, with a boho style and a captivating sound. As she sings you can’t help but feel as if you're listening to an album, she seems to melt right into the music. The perfect blend of soul-stirring tones and frequencies coming from her guitar and voice have the ability to leave you paralyzed and entranced. (Shout out to the awesome sound system at the El Club)
Her version of “Feeling Good” kidnaps you and takes you to rainbows and sunshine whether you want to be there or not. She is such a sweet spirit that you can’t help but to smile while she serenades you. Her next song was an original called "Weatherman" and, as if she didn’t know she already had our full attention, she repeatedly asked the audience to listen to the lyrics. You can tell she is a true artist and is deeply concerned that her message shines through. “Weatherman” was a melancholy poignant piece that made you reflect on your own inner peace and happiness…or lack thereof. This was a deeply moving performance that highlights her serious songwriting skills. Victory then treated us to her rendition of two more crowd favorites “Overjoyed” and “His Eye Is on the Sparrow.” Her ability to effortlessly flow thru Jazz, Soul, Pop and Gospel genres was so satisfying. Our musical taste buds were completely satiated.
Perhaps one of the most endearing things to also see was that Victory’s whole family was in the building. She revealed that while she is best known as an NYC Central Park singer, she is originally from Detroit!!!
The Boyd family, a talented group of singers known as ‘Infinity's Song’, is also a staple of the Central Park musical landscape and as a special treat, her brothers and sisters joined her on stage for a final performance of “Heal the World.” It was easy to see why Jay- Z not only signed Victory to Roc Nation but pledged to sign the entire family also.
If you get a chance, please do me a favor and check out this magnificent artist and especially her live show. It will be a treat that you will not soon forget! Whatever the ticket price Victory Boyd will not disappoint.
